PetSafe® Stay + Play Wireless Fence Review

At a Glance:

Pros:

  • You can contain an unlimited number of dogs on the system.
  • Its containment boundary signal is stable and dependable.
  • Its receiver collar is rechargeable, waterproof, responsive and comfortable for your dog.

Cons

  • The amount of area it is designed to cover may be inadequate for some properties.

Recharging the Collar

Because the Stay + Play comes with a charger, you will never have to buy any replacement batteries. To charge the batteries, it takes around 2 ½ hours. A full charge will last you about 2 or 3 weeks, depending on how often your dog tests the boundary. The more times that the receiver has to beep and deliver a static correction, the faster the battery will lose its charge. During the dog training process, you can expect the batteries to deplete rather quickly.

Replacing the Collar Probes

With the help of a probe wrench, you will screw and unscrew the receiver probes on the collar. This needs to be done if you are changing the probes to longer ones, for example, or if you remove them to clean the collar.

Collar Tester

The collar tester is used to make sure that the collar is functioning properly. There are two holes on the tester, which are placed as close to the probes as you can. If the probes are working properly, indicated by a tester that lights up, this means that the collar is able to deliver a static correction. The tester is quite helpful when you need to locate the boundaries of your wireless fence, in order to decide where your training flags should be placed.

Contact Points

Most wireless dog fences come with both a set of short probes and long probes. Dogs with longer hair or thicker fur will need the longer probes. It is relatively easy to change out the probes when using the probe wrench.

Limited Lifetime Warranty

Beginning with the date of your purchase, you receive a full warranty on any malfunctions in the system you may have, regardless of their nature. After the year is over, you receive a limited lifetime warranty, which means that you will receive an elevated discount on any repairs that you may need. Depending on what type of damage happens, you can expect the discounted repair rate to cost between $20 and $60. However, be aware that your warranty may be considered void if you don’t follow manufacturer instructions, such as keeping your transmitter away from moisture.

The Transmitter

The Stay + Play transmitter is currently the smallest of all PetSafe® wireless transmitters. It needs to be placed on the bottom floor of your home, at least 4 feet above ground level. The area it is located in should never drop below freezing, should be well-ventilated and free of moisture. To minimize signal interference, be sure to place it at least 3 feet away from any metal appliances. You can mount the transmitter to the wall, using the mounting template that comes with the kit. Be sure to thoroughly test the signal reliability in its final location before permanently mounting it to the wall.

There are two types of warning signals that the transmitter handles, a power loss signal and a failure signal. Note that when you are alerted with either of these signals, your dogs will not be contained.

Signal Coverage

The Stay + Play transmitter has the ability to contain your dog in a circular area that has a diameter of up to 210 feet and a radius of 105 feet, which equals ¾ of an acre. Should you need to cover a larger area than this, you can do so by purchasing additional wireless transmitters to expand the size of the circle.

Adjust the size of your circle by using the control dial that is located on the main unit. You turn the dial from low to high in order to adjust how large you wish for your containment circle to be. There are 8 different settings to choose from.

Boundary Stability

Just like all wireless dog fences, signal instability may exist. This means that the location of the boundary can move from one minute to another. In regards to the PetSafe® Stay + Play, this signal instability is rather insignificant. You can expect the border to vary about 2 feet, on either side. For example, if you set the containment area to 210 feet in diameter, your boundary will fluctuate between 208 and 212 feet. However, the smaller that you have set your containment area, the smaller your boundary fluctuations will be.

Unlimited Dogs

The Stay + Play system has the ability to contain an unlimited amount of dogs. However, your kit will only come with one dog fence collar. This means that if you have more than one dog, you will need to purchase additional collars. The Stay + Play collars are only designed to be used on dogs who weigh at least 5 pounds and are at least 6 months old.

Conclusion

If a reliable and affordable wireless dog fence is what you are looking for, the PetSafe® Stay + Play has got you covered.
